Best Time to Visit Uttarkashi: Quick Answer
The best time to visit Uttarkashi is from March to June and again from September to November. These windows give you pleasant weather, open roads, accessible temples, and the full spiritual and scenic experience this region is famous for.

If you’re coming specifically for the Gangotri Temple and Char Dham Yatra, plan your visit between May and June or September to October — the sweetest spots in the Uttarkashi calendar.
Season-by-Season Breakdown
🌸 Spring & Summer (March – June) — Peak Season & Best Overall
Spring and early summer are widely considered the best time to visit Uttarkashi. Temperatures hover comfortably between 15°C and 30°C, making sightseeing, trekking, and temple visits genuinely enjoyable.
The snow begins to melt across the higher Himalayan passes, the deodar forests glow in deep green, and wildflowers carpet the hillsides in brilliant colour. The Gangotri Temple opens its doors in late April or early May (on Akshaya Tritiya) — marking the beginning of the Char Dham Yatra season.
Why visit in summer:
- Gangotri Temple is open for darshan
- Ideal temperatures for trekking to Gangotri Glacier and Tapovan Meadow
- Roads are clear and well-maintained
- Maximum daylight hours for exploring
- Vibrant atmosphere as pilgrims and tourists arrive from across India
Our tip from Devdaar Cottage: May and June are peak months — book your cottage well in advance if you’re planning during this period!
Monsoon (July – September) — For the Adventurous & Festival Lovers
Monsoon in Uttarkashi is a season of two moods. On one hand, the landscape becomes impossibly lush — the skies turn deep blue after showers, the trees seem freshly painted, and the Bhagirathi River swells with a raw, powerful beauty. On the other hand, landslides and roadblocks are a real concern, particularly in July and August.
Temperatures during monsoon dip to a cool 2°C to 10°C, and the region receives moderate to heavy rainfall. Travel requires extra days of buffer and good rain gear.
That said, September marks the end of the monsoon — the rains ease, the skies clear, and the valley is at its most vibrant. Many experienced pilgrims time their visit to arrive just as monsoon retreats.
Why visit in monsoon:
- Stunning green landscapes and dramatic waterfalls
- Fewer crowds — more peaceful darshan at Gangotri Temple
- Several local festivals celebrated during this period
- Better accommodation deals and availability
Our tip: Avoid late July and August for road travel if possible. Early September onwards is safer and remarkably beautiful.
Autumn (October – November) — Second Best & Highly Recommended
Autumn is arguably the most underrated time to visit Uttarkashi. The monsoon has cleared, the air is crisp and transparent, and the Himalayan peaks stand out in stunning clarity against blue skies. The golden and amber hues across the valleys make every photograph feel like a painting.
The Gangotri Temple remains open through Diwali (October–November) before closing for winter. This creates a beautiful window of calm pilgrimage — fewer crowds than peak summer, but all the spiritual energy and natural grandeur intact.
Temperatures start dropping from October, ranging between 5°C to 15°C during the day. Pack warm layers.
Why visit in autumn:
- Crystal-clear mountain views after monsoon
- The Gangotri Temple open till Diwali — perfect for late-season Char Dham Yatra
- Peaceful, uncrowded atmosphere
- Ideal for photography and trekking
- Pleasant daytime temperatures
Winter (December – February) — For Solitude Seekers & Snow Lovers
Winter in Uttarkashi is intense. Heavy snowfall closes the Gangotri Temple and many high-altitude roads become inaccessible. Temperatures can drop to -10°C, and travel gets unpredictable.
However, for those who seek solitude, silence, and the raw beauty of snow-covered Himalayan peaks, November can still hold charm. Uttarkashi town itself remains accessible throughout winter, and the snow-dusted landscape has its own meditative quiet.
The Ganga Temple moves to its winter seat at Mukhba village (2,620 m) from November to April — offering a unique and intimate darshan experience away from the larger crowds.
Note: This season is generally not recommended for first-time visitors or those with health concerns.
