Gangotri is one of the most sacred destinations in Hindu pilgrimage — one of the four Char Dhams of Uttarakhand and the spiritual origin of the Ganga, India’s most revered river. Every year, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims travel through Uttarkashi to reach the Gangotri Temple, seek blessings at the holy shrine, and take a dip in the icy Bhagirathi river.
If you are planning your Gangotri Char Dham Yatra, this guide covers everything you need to know — from opening dates and route details to the best time to visit and where to stay in Uttarkashi.
Gangotri Temple: The Sacred Story
The Gangotri Temple is dedicated to Goddess Ganga and is built at the spot where, according to Hindu mythology, King Bhagirath meditated to bring the Ganges down from the heavens. The temple sits at an altitude of 3,048 metres, surrounded by snow-covered peaks and the thundering Bhagirathi river. The present temple structure was built by the Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa in the early 18th century.
The temple opens every year on Akshaya Tritiya (usually in late April or early May) and closes on Diwali (October/November) when the idol is ceremonially moved to Mukhba village for the winter months.

How to Reach Gangotri from Uttarkashi
Gangotri is approximately 100 km from Uttarkashi on NH 94 (the Gangotri highway). The road is a mountain highway with some narrow stretches — the journey takes approximately 3.5 to 4.5 hours by taxi or private vehicle.
Travel options from Uttarkashi to Gangotri:
- Shared jeeps / taxis: Available from Uttarkashi bus stand every morning. Affordable and the most popular choice.
- Private taxi: Hire from Uttarkashi for a direct, comfortable journey (~₹1,800–2,500 one way).
- Private vehicle: Self-drive is possible but requires careful driving on the mountain road. A 4WD or high-clearance vehicle is recommended after the monsoon.
Best Time for Gangotri Char Dham Yatra
May to June (Peak Yatra Season): The busiest and most auspicious time for the Char Dham Yatra. The temple freshly opened, pilgrim energy is at its highest, and the mountain weather is relatively mild. Expect crowds — book your Uttarkashi hotel well in advance.
September to October (Post-Monsoon): Our personal recommendation for a more peaceful Gangotri experience. The crowds have thinned, the skies are crystal clear after the monsoon, and the Bhagirathi valley is at its most beautiful. Ideal for pilgrims who prefer a more contemplative journey.
What to Expect at Gangotri Temple
- Temple timing: Morning aarti typically around 6:30–7:00 AM. Evening aarti around 7:00–7:30 PM. Check locally as timings can vary.
- Dress modestly — traditional attire is recommended and expected at the temple premises.
- The Bhagirathi river flows ice-cold even in June. Many pilgrims take a dip at the Surya Kund or nearby ghats. Go carefully — the current is strong.
